  • Made mining surveys of many countries from 1854 to 1873, when he came to the U.S.

  • Developer of Caribou Mines in Boulder County, Colorado

  • Was United States Deputy Mineral Surveyor, and Mining Engineer at Sunshine, Boulder County, Colorado

  • Designed and constructed silver reduction works at Rosita, Colorado

  • Chief of Land Department of the United States Surveyor General's office in Denver

  • Was long regarded as the "father" of the Society

  • Author of articles about mineral deposits of Colorado, artesian wells of Denver, and on coal and natural gas
